Wall Street Journal Reporter Evan Gershkovich Marks a Year in Russian Prison
A Letter From His Family
American Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has now been detained in Russia for 250 days, and the ordeal for his family is far from over. In a powerful letter to the Wall Street Journal, Gershkovich's family speaks out about the challenges they have faced during his imprisonment.
"Evan is a symbol both of courageous journalism and the escalating crackdown on dissent in Russia," his family wrote.
Gershkovich, the son of Soviet emigres who settled in New Jersey, moved to Russia in 2017 to work for The Moscow Times newspaper. He was detained in March 2022 while on a reporting trip and was charged with spying. His family has since been fighting for his release.
In their letter, Gershkovich's family describes the anguish of not knowing when he will be released. They also express their concern about his health and well-being, as they have not been allowed to see or speak to him since his detention.
"Evan is a symbol both of courageous journalism and the escalating crackdown on dissent in Russia," his family wrote. "His detention is a chilling reminder that the Kremlin will stop at nothing to silence independent voices."
Gershkovich's family has called on the U.S. government and the international community to pressure Russia to release him. They have also launched a website, FreeEvan.org, to raise awareness about his case.
