Evan Gershkovich Freed in Prisoner Swap

American Journalist Held for Espionage for Over a Year

WEB Russia has freed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich as part of a major prisoner swap. Gershkovich, who was detained in March 2023 while on a reporting trip, was held on an allegation of espionage that he denies. The American-born son of Soviet immigrants, Gershkovich has been held in Russia for more than a year.

WEB For more than a year, the top of The Wall Street Journal's website has featured prominent coverage of the imprisonment of Evan Gershkovich. The newspaper has consistently maintained that Gershkovich is innocent of the charges against him and has called for his release. In a statement released after Gershkovich's release, The Wall Street Journal said, "We are relieved that Evan Gershkovich is finally free after more than a year of unjust imprisonment. We are grateful to the Biden administration for its tireless efforts to secure his release and to all those who have supported Evan and his family during this difficult time."
